Before going to the flop you have a few things you should probably think about. Are you in early, middle, or late position? What is your chip stack size? Does everyone fold or go all-in against you?
If you're in early position, you really only care about whether you have good cards or not. If you're in middle, you'll have a little bit more information. If you're in late position, there are some things you should consider.
First, when it folds around, you want to try and steal the blinds when your stack can afford it. Being in late position, or the small blind, you'll be able to get in cheap if you have a hand. If you are playing a limit game and you can afford to go all-in most times, than it is probably best to just fold.

The thing about this style of play is, if you have some type of a big hand, you can be sure that someone will have a good hand against you. If you are playing a tournament and can't afford to call an all-in, than you should probably fold. So, if you have a big hand, like two pair, or even just a pair, you should raise pre-flop. If you are called, then you should either bet or fold if anyone else bets. If someone bets substantially and your hand is significantly worse than their hand, you should fold. This is just a Heads-Up strategy. It is not the end all be all of heads up poker strategy, but it is a very good starting point. Players who make the mistake of trying to push an opponent out of the game because they have a bigger hand than you are a desperate player, and usually they do end up folding their hand.
The other Heads-Up strategy is to make sure you pick your spots well. That means not allowing your opponent to try and steal the blinds the same way you try to earn chips. If you give your opponents the chance to see a flop cheaply, you are risking valuable chips.
Make sure you are raising the right amount. After all, not everyone is a calling station. Make sure the stakes are comfortable so that you will either call or fold when you have a good hand. The amount you bet can also impact the size of the pot, so make sure you have a good hand when you sit down to play.
Chances are, your opponent will have a good hand against you. When you have a good starting hand, like ace high, you want to raise the opponent as much as possible. This is the hardest play to make, but if you have a good hand you can always walk away with the pot.
spread your bets forward, rather than calling forward, as it is more difficult to call a raise as opposed to folding. Approach the game of poker as a long term investment. When you are winning, invest more into your future plays, as opposed to waiting for your hand to improve.
